IP Phone

Cisco Systems is a global leader in networking, cybersecurity, and collaboration technology. Founded in 1984, Cisco pioneered much of the infrastructure that powers the internet. Today, its brand is synonymous with reliable, secure, and scalable enterprise communications and networking solutions.

Within its vast portfolio, Cisco’s Collaboration suite is a cornerstone for modern business communication. Two of its most critical and interconnected products are:

Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Call Manager)

This is the software-based “brain” of a Cisco voice and video collaboration system.

  • What it is: A robust, scalable call-processing platform installed on-premises, in the cloud (as part of Cisco Webex Calling), or in a hybrid model.

  • Core Function: It manages all call routing, signaling, and connection services for an organization’s IP telephony network. Think of it as a highly advanced, enterprise-grade PBX (Private Branch Exchange).

  • Key Features:

    • Call Control: Sets up, routes, and terminates voice and video calls.

    • Scalability: Supports from tens to hundreds of thousands of users.

    • Integration: Deeply integrates with other Cisco collaboration tools (Webex, Unity Connection voicemail, IM & Presence) and third-party applications.

    • Security & Management: Provides enterprise-level security, detailed call reporting, and centralized administration.

Cisco IP Phones

These are the physical or virtual endpoints (hardware or software) that users interact with.

    • What they are: A wide range of desk phones, conference phones, and software clients designed to work seamlessly with Cisco Call Manager and the broader collaboration ecosystem.

    • Core Function: To provide high-quality audio (and often video) interfaces for users to make and receive calls over an IP network (VoIP).

    • Key Features & Series:

      • Entry-Level (e.g., 7800 Series): Reliable, essential business phones with clear audio.

      • Mid-Range/Mainstream (e.g., 8800 Series): Feature-rich with high-definition audio, color screens, and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi options.

      • Executive/High-End (e.g., 8900/9900 Series): Premium audio/video capabilities, large touchscreens, and advanced collaboration features.

      • Conference Phones (e.g., Webex Board & Room Series): Designed for meeting rooms with superior audio pickup.

      • Software Clients: Cisco Webex App allows users to turn their computers and mobile devices into “softphones.”
